Fall Creek Gorge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All of the photos on this page were taken at Fall Creek Gorge near Attica Indiana.

I had heard about this place, but had never visited.  It is a small Nature Conservation Area (the parking lot only provides parking for 6-8 cars) in Indiana located along Fall Creek and passes through sandstone cliffs.

The action of the water along the narrow bed has cut deeply into the cliffs and has created numerous small basins called the Potholes. These potholes range from about a 1 foot wide to as much as 6 feet wide and have depths of 4 - 5 feet.

At the end of the pothole section, the river bed levels out where you can walk upstream to a small waterfall.

Fall Creek Gorge - Path

Attica, Indiana

From the small parking lot, which only holds 6-8 cars, the path winds through the woods on a short hike into the gorge.

Tributary Stream

Fall Creek Gorge

Attica, Indiana

A small tributary stream enters the gorge at the point where the parking lot path ends. A small chute of water has carved out a deep channel in the rock here leading down to Fall Creek.

Around the corner from the tributary stream, you immediately come to the “pothole” section of the gorge. The action of the water along this narrow stream bed has formed these small basins, nicknamed “potholes”. They range in size from 1 foot to more than 6 feet across and are as much as 4 – 5 feet deep. This was actually as far as I could get going up stream without literally going for a swim. With the air temp at 50 degrees F and the water even colder, I decided to take the high road along the cliff after taking a couple of shots here.

This was taken from the trail on the top of the cliff. From this vantage point, you can really see the potholes. Now you know why I took the high road!!

Carved Rock #1

OK… So once I was able to drag myself away from the waterfall, I started walking down the river bed back toward the potholes. It was pretty flat for a while, although you really had to watch where you stepped as even in this area, there were places that went from being very shallow to well over the top of my boots very quickly. Needless to say, I didn’t leave dry!!

After rounding a couple of bends in the river, I came back to the area above the potholes and found this section of the river bed that was carved out. This channel was about 2 feet deep.

A little further down stream you can really see how the water has carved out the rock along the walls of the canyon.

A little different perspective – you can really tell how smooth the rocks have been worn by the water.

Water Slide

The water flowed through this small section and turned the corner at the end to come back into the creek. It reminded me of a slide at a water park….

Looking Downstream

Fall Creek Gorge

Attica, Indiana

This is a view of the potholes area looking downstream. The large rock cliff right in the center of this picture is right at the bottom of the path from the parking lot. However, as I still didn’t want to take a swim, I would have to go back to the waterfall to take the cliff top path back to my car.

OK.. I couldn’t help myself. I had to come back to take the path back and had to take some more angles of the waterfall….

Fall Creek Waterfall - Final Shot

As I was leaving, I turned for one last look and saw the waterfall framed by the yellow tree with the reflections in the river upstream. I couldn’t help myself and had to take one last shot!!
